HipPO – Hip Position and Orientation

In a demographic aging society, the persons with severe coxarthrosis proportionally increased over the last years. For the coming decades further growth rates are prognosticated. In case of a coxarthrosis the implantation of an endoprosthesis ensures a post operatively profit of life quality for the patients. Presently, there are approximately 210.000 primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) interventions per anno and additionally up to 37.000 of revision interventions. It can be concluded that musculo-skeletal diseases have a great socio-economic relevance. The reconstruction of the joint biomechanics during a THA is an important aspect, in order to obtain satisfying long-term results. Malpositioning of the endoprosthesis is associated with an increased luxation risk, and increased implant abrasion, furthermore, decreased mobility, and premature implant loosening.

In the context of a co-operation between the MediTEC and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the University Hospital Aachen, the goal of this project is a systematic evaluation from selected and established methods to the positioning and orientation of hip prosthesis components.

In most cases biomechanical aspects are not considered and existing biomechanical models for THA planning are only conditionally used. In the context of the primary THA, therefore, a therapy approach should be developed, which enables the consideration of patient-specific needs during the implant positioning and -orientation.
