Artificial intelligence (AI) offers solutions in a wide field of medical applications and is part of our research in different research projects. It can assist the user of medical devices by a knowledge database and learning from past experiences to make safe future decisions. Especially in complex robotic applications with varying conditions and changing goals, like robotic surgery or patient transport of emergency medical services these features may efficiently improve the medical process.
Research aspects of AI in mechatronic and robotic applications are the development of robust stair detection algorithm based on visual data for an active patient transport aid or the intelligent control adaptation of such a device based on the individual behaviour of the patient and user. Furthermore AI is capable of adapting to individual anatomies and efficient path planning during mechanical bone processing of synergistical milling devices for orthopaedic and neurosurgery.
